Military Discharge

Private Jeremiah McGowan of the Second New York Regiment received this discharge, signed by General Washington as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army, on June 7, 1783. Having served through six years, including the Valley Forge Winter of 1777-78, McGowan received the Badge of Merit, a military decoration created by General Washington to honor his veteran soldiers. The badge was a predecessor of the Purple Heart.
